Paul Janssen Futurelab Leiden: Module Clinical Development


PJ Futurelab, a non-profit education initiative of LUMC, has developed the highly successful course Clinical Development. The module Clinical Development at Paul Janssen Futurelab Leiden provides learning-by-doing training to ambitious postgraduate biomedical researchers. This accredited certificate course will help further your career and increase your knowledge on the optimal development of novel medical interventions using real-world cases. 

This international blended course (online + on-campus) has been accredited by KNMG and received an average 4.6 out of 5 stars from participants. Nearly graduated PhDs, postdocs, senior scientists and PI’s with a strong interest in the clinical development of new medical interventions (i.e. drugs, ATMPs, vaccines, medical devices, medical nutritional products) will benefit most from the course.

  • Online course: Learn the question-based clinical development method and practice with simplified teaching cases. 5 weeks online, 5 hours study/week, online exam.
  • On-campus: work in small interdisciplinary teams and dive head first into a myriad of advanced teaching cases based on real-world examples. 4-days course, 20 hours prep time, real world cases. 
  • On-campus extended: work with a mentor - a clinical expert - to develop your own clinical trial and guide you through and guide you through the challenges of drafting a clinical trial application. 5-days course, guidance from a clinical expert, win a €500.000,- grant.

Scholarships for UMC and NKI/AVL available and chance to win a €500,000 grant

50% scholarships are available for one participant of each UMC/ University and the NKI/AVL. The scholarship covers 50% of the course fee and awards participation in the complete blended course (online + on-campus + extended). Other participants from non-profit organizations receive a standard 25% discount on the course fee. The course participant who develops the best Clinical Trial Application for a study with a licensed medicinal product, receives a nomination letter to be submitted with the proposal to ZonMw for a grant of €500,000. Janssen Pharmaceutica scholarships for biomedical start-ups

Janssen Pharmaceutica NV has made available 2 scholarships for the blended course Clinical Development from Paul Janssen Futurelab Leiden (PJ Futurelab). PJ Futurelab is a non-profit, independent education & training initiative of the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) and Leiden University. Our mission is to train graduated biomedical professional to be tomorrow’s leaders in life sciences.

The scholarship awards the full course fee of €5600,- and gives access to the complete blended course Clinical Development: a 5-week online introduction course (study load 5 hours/week) + 4 days on-campus + 5 days on-campus extended. The international blended course Clinical Development from PJ Futurelab Leiden is highly rated by participants (4.4 out of 5 stars). Graduated biomedical professionals from promising start-ups are introduced to Question-Based Clinical Development and are guided on the development of a first-in-man trial. The course offers a unique opportunity to work on extensive teaching cases based on real R&D projects and to meet like-minded peers and key opinion leaders from prominent life sciences companies.
